Easy Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe

This recipe is my secret weapon for elegant desserts with minimal effort. With just a few ingredients, you can create gorgeous chocolate covered strawberries that taste as amazing as they look.

Plus, you can easily customize them with different toppings such as sprinkles, candy drizzles, or various types of chocolate to match any celebration or theme. I like to double dip them in different colors for tuxedos or just fun colorful treats.

These strawberries are perfect for birthdays, Mother’s Day, and of course, Valentine’s Day. They are a perfect finger dessert and I have never had guests complain when they see them on a platter!

Ingredients You Will Need

Blocks of chocolate and white chocolate on a white square plate with fresh berries in a bowl.
  • Fresh strawberries: Look for ripe, room-temperature strawberries with green leaves for easy dipping and a pretty presentation.
  • milk chocolate or white chocolate: High-quality chocolate, almond bark blocks, or candy melts will give you a smooth, glossy finish.
  • Optional: Roll a slightly wet coated strawberry in sprinkles, crushed cookies, chopped pecans, peanuts, pistachios, or mini chocolate chips.

How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Step 1: Rinse the strawberries in slightly cool water, then use a paper towel to dry them completely. Even a drop of moisture will ruin the chocolate, so make sure they are fully dried off.

Step 2: Melt the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl or use a double boiler. If microwaving, heat in 15-second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is smooth and creamy.

Step 3: Hold the strawberry by the green leaves and dip it into the melted chocolate. Gently tap or shake it so excess chocolate will drip back into the bowl. Place the dipped strawberries onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper.

Step 4: Add sprinkles immediately after dipping, while the chocolate is still wet. If you’re drizzling chocolate or candy melts, wait until the coating has dried.

Step 5: Let the chocolate set at room temperature for about 15 minutes to 1 hour. If you’re in a hurry, pop them in the fridge to speed up the process.

Variations

  • Two Tone Design: Dip half of the strawberry in white chocolate and the other half in dark chocolate for a fun, contrast.
  • Holiday Themes: Use sprinkles or candy melts in seasonal colors like red and pink for Valentine’s Day, green and red for Christmas, and other festive colors for various occasions.

Tips for Dipped Strawberries

  • Use a good chocolate or candy melts: Candy melts or almond bark work beautifully for a smooth finish. If you’re using chocolate chips, add a teaspoon of coconut oil to help with melting and dipping. Although when I’ve used chips, I find they take a bit longer to dry.
  • Keep the strawberries dry: Moisture will cause the chocolate to seize, so be sure they’re completely dry before dipping. If you have them in the fridge, they will need to come to room temp too.
  • Work quickly with sprinkles: Add them right after dipping while the chocolate is slightly wet so they will stick to the berries.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do chocolate strawberries last?

These are best enjoyed fresh, ideally within a few hours of making them. If you need to store them, place them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. I have found that when they have been in the refrigerator, they do sweat a little bit and the berries can shrivel up a bit.

Can I use food coloring to change the chocolate color?

If you want to add coloring, be sure to use an oil based food coloring or candy coloring for the best results. Regular food coloring can cause the chocolate to seize up, so be sure to use the right kind. I personally like the colored candy melts because they already have the color.
