Easy Pizza Cupcake Recipe

I love making these cupcakes, because everyone can add their favorite toppings. They are fun to let guests make from a variety of fillings. The possibilities of flavor combinations are endless.

Unlike traditional pizza slices, these pizza cupcakes are easy to grab and go, which is perfect for pass around food. Adults and kids love these fun bites, and no plates or forks are needed!

Pizza Cupcake Ingredients

Ingredients needed to make pizza cupcakes on a marble table.
  • refrigerated, canned crescent rolls– pre-made dough makes this recipe a fast option!
  • pizza sauce or marinara sauce
  • shredded mozzarella cheese
  • mini pepperonis
  • Optional: Favorite Pizza Toppings

How to Make Pizza Cupcakes

STEP 1: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F, then spray a muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray, or brush with olive oil, and set aside.

STEP 2: Open crescent rolls and roll out dough. Cut into 8 squares, and press each square into muffin tin, gently pressing dough to fill cup space.

Crescent roll dough rolled out and cut into eight sections.

STEP 3: Sprinkle shredded cheese onto dough, then spoon about a tablespoon of the sauce over the cheese. Add additional shredded cheese over the sauce, and then top with mini pepperonis.

STEP 4: Place in the center of the oven on the center rack and bake at 375 degrees F for 15-18 minutes, until the crust is golden brown.

Tips for Making Cupcake Pizzas

  • Don’t Overfill: I just keep mine simple with sauce, cheese, and mini pepperoni. But if you want to add more toppings, use small amounts and cut toppings like bell peppers or onions into small pieces.
  • Use Pre-Made Dough: You can make your dough from scratch, but using refrigerated crescent roll dough or pizza dough is a much easier option!
  • Spray the Muffin Pan: Give the cupcake pan a good spray with non-stick cooking spray to make getting them out of the pan easier. You can also use liners if you want to serve them as appetizers or grab and go.
  • Cut Dough Evenly: When using crescent dough, roll it out and cut it into even pieces. This helps them fill and bake evenly.

Variations

Besides pepperoni pizzas, you can easily switch up the fillings to make something for everyone! Just a few of my family’s favorites:

  • Hawaiian Pizza Cupcakes: Add diced ham and small pineapple bits for your Hawaiian pizza lovers.
  • Vegetarian Pizza Cupcakes: Use your favorite pizza topping veggies like bell peppers, black olives, onions, mushrooms, or cherry tomatoes. .
  • Meat Lovers Pizza Cupcakes: Add in cooked ground sausage, crumbled bacon, or salami pieces.

FAQ’S

Can I use different types of dough to make pizza cupcakes?

Yes! You can use pre-made pizza dough, biscuit dough, or even puff pastry.

How do I store leftover pizza cupcakes?

Let any leftover pizza cupcakes cool first. Then wrap them or place them in an air tight container. Keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

To freeze leftovers, wrap them individually in plastic wrap, then place them in an airtight container, or freezer Ziploc bag.

To reheat cupcakes, bake them in the oven or heat them in a microwave until warmed through.

Can I make pizza cupcakes ahead of time?

Yes. But of course, they are always best when you first bake them, so you can assemble the pizza cupcakes a day in advance, cover them, and keep in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake and serve them.

Equipment

  • 1 Cupcake Pan

Ingredients

  • 1 can Refrigerated Crescent Rolls, 8 ounces, original rolls (or canned pizza dough)
  • 1/2 cup Pizza Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Mini Pepperoni Slices
  • 1 cup Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F, then spray a cupcake pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Open crescent rolls and roll out into a sheet. Use a pizza cutter or knife to cut into 8 evenly sized rectangles.
  • Gently press a piece into the pan, lining a cup. Repeat until all 8 pieces are used.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheese into each cup, then add a small spoonful of the pizza sauce. Sprinkle additional cheese over the sauce, and then add the pepperonis.
  • Place the pan in the center of the oven, and bake at 375 degrees F for 15-17 minutes, until the crust is golden brown.

Notes

Be careful you don’t overfill your cup! Too many fillings can cause the cupcake to overflow and it will be hard to lift out and eat.
Give the cupcake pan a good spray with non-stick cooking spray to make getting them out of the pan easier.
Try to cut the dough into even sized pieces. This helps them fill and bake evenly.
