yellow mustard-adds very light tangy and spicy sharpness to the recipe

brown sugar-adds a little bit of extra sweetness to the beans mixture

Worcestershire sauce-adds just a little bit of extra flavors like sweet and salty

onion powder-made from dehydrated onions, it adds extra flavor without having chopped onions in the texture

garlic powder-adds a delicious hint of garlicy flavor to the recipe

Tips

  • Use Quality Hot Dogs: Depending on your budget, use an upgraded hot dog, like all beef, or at the very least, pick a good brand. You can also used beef sausage or kielbasa for an extra flavorful combination.
  • Make Bites Smaller: If you are making this for a party or event that will have toddlers, be sure to cut the hot dogs into smaller pieces, or even quarter them.
  • Make This Ahead of Time: Beanie Weenies taste even better the next day! Which is why this recipe is perfect if you want to make them early. Just store them in the fridge, and then serve them in a slow cooker to keep them warm.

Variations

  • Spicy Beanie Weenies: Add a tablespoon of hot sauce, or BBQ sauce to make them extra spicy.
  • Optional Mix Ins: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon, smoked sausage, or your favorite spices to add extra flavors.
  • Hot Dog Flavors: Swap out regular hot dogs for cheese filled, turkey or chicken franks.
  • Make it Vegetarian: Use vegetarian hot dogs to make this dish meat free.
Cut up hot dogs, mixed with beans, in a white bowl with potato chips scattered around the dish.

FAQ’S

What are Beanie Weenies?

Beanie Weenies is a classic comfort food dish made from baked beans and sliced hot dogs. I like to slightly cook my hot dog pieces first, but if you are in a hurry, you can skip that step, making this an even faster meal to have on the table.

How long do Beanie Weenies take to make?

This recipe takes about 15 minutes to prepare and cook on the stovetop. If you are in a hurry, you can also cook the hot dogs in the microwave, and combine the beans and other ingredients in a microwave safe bowl, and cook for 3-5 minutes. The stovetop method only takes a few extra minutes, and allows the flavors to simmer together.

Can I use canned beans other than baked beans?

Absolutely! While baked beans are traditional, you can use pinto, navy, or kidney beans.

How do I store leftovers?

Keep leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 3–4 days. They actually taste better the next day as the flavors have had time to combine.
To reheat leftovers on the stovetop over medium heat or in the microwave.

What do I serve as a side to Beanie Weenies?

You can serve dinner rolls, cornbread, buttered toast, or just a simple side of veggies or a salad.

  1. This looks like such a good, fun meal, especially for a day like Halloween, which is on the horizon.
I could cook this in just a few moments and have fun playing with the kids in the process. I could put one of the older ones in charge of it, and they would be learning to cook at the same time as enjoying all the other activities. 🙂
