Ingredients You Will Need

Ingredients needed to make monster cake mix cookies on a white marble table, labeled.
  • Chocolate cake mix: One 13.25 ounce box of Betty Crocker Triple Chocolate Fudge cake mix makes the chocolate cookie base.
  • Vegetable oil: One-third cup keeps the cookies soft and gives the dough the right consistency.
  • Eggs: Two large eggs help hold the cookie dough together.
  • Halloween baking confetti: One cup adds all those fun Halloween colors. You can also make your own combination using Halloween M&M’s and sprinkles.
  • Candy eyes: You’ll need about 40–60 candy eyes, depending on how many you add to each cookie.

A full list of ingredients is included in the recipe card below.

Variations

  • Change Flavors: You can use another flavor of cake mix if you don’t want chocolate. Vanilla, yellow, or even red velvet would be fun with the Halloween colors.
  • Switch Candies: If you can’t find Halloween baking confetti, combine orange, green, purple, and black sprinkles with Halloween-colored M&M’s.
  • Candy Eyeball Sprinkles: You can also use different sizes of candy eyes. Mixing small and large eyeballs would make the cookies look even more like little monsters.

How to Make Halloween Cake Mix Cookies

Chocolate cake mix, eggs, and oil, in a large clear glass mixing bowl.
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Add the cake mix, vegetable oil, and eggs to a large mixing bowl. Stir until everything is well combined and a thick cookie dough forms.

  1. Use a small cookie scoop to portion the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about two inches between each cookie.

  1. Bake for 9–11 minutes. The cookies should be set around the edges but still look soft in the center. As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, add a few extra candies, sprinkles, or eyes, to the tops if you want even more color. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Tips

  • Don’t overbake: These cookies will continue to set as they cool. Taking them out while the centers are still soft will give you a softer, chewier cookie.
  • Add extra eyes after baking: Pressing the candy eyes into the warm cookies keeps them looking bright and prevents them from melting or changing shape in the oven.
  • Chill for thicker cookies: You don’t have to chill this dough, but refrigerating it for 20–30 minutes before baking can help reduce spreading and give you thicker cookies.
  • Check your cake mix size: This recipe is written for a 13.25 ounce cake mix. If you’re using a 15.25 ounce box, increase the vegetable oil to ½ cup.
  • Save some decorations: Set aside a few M&M’s or pieces of baking confetti to press into the tops when the cookies come out of the oven. It makes them look much prettier.

FAQs

Can I use a different cake mix?

Yes. You can use just about any flavor of cake mix. Chocolate gives these cookies their dark monster-cookie look, but vanilla, yellow, or red velvet cake mix would also work.

Do I need to chill cake mix cookie dough?

No. You can bake these cookies right away. If you prefer thicker cookies that spread a little less, chill the dough for about 20–30 minutes before scooping and baking.

What can I use instead of Halloween baking confetti?

Make your own mixture using Halloween-colored M&M’s and sprinkles. Orange, purple, green, and black work especially well for Halloween.

Storage

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4–5 days. You can also freeze the baked cookies for up to 2 months. Let them cool completely before placing them in a freezer-safe container with parchment paper between the layers.

Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Portion Scoop

Ingredients

  • 1 13.25 chocolate cake mix
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup candies and sprinkles
  • 1/4 cup candy eyes, plus extra eyes to top cookies

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Combine the cake mix, oil, and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Stir until everything is well combined and a thick cookie dough forms.
  • Fold in the confetti mix, making sure it’s evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  • Scoop the dough using about a small cookie scoop and place the cookies a couple of inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake until the edges are set but the centers are still soft. Add extra sprinkles, candies, and candy eyes, before the cookies cool.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Notes

  • Don’t overbake the cookies. They may still look a little soft in the center when you take them out, but they’ll continue to set as they cool.
  • Use a cookie scoop so the cookies are all about the same size and bake evenly.
  • Change up the mix-ins. M&M’s, chocolate chips, sprinkles, or a combination of your favorites all work well.
  • Try different cake mix flavors. Chocolate is perfect for Halloween, but you can easily switch it out to create different flavors and colors for other occasions.
