What is a Mai Tai
A Mai Tai is a classic rum cocktail that’s fresh, citrusy, and super refreshing. It’s made with lime juice, orange curaçao, orgeat syrup, and rum, which gives it that perfect balance of bright, slightly sweet, and just a little nutty flavor.
It was originally created by Trader Vic back in the 1940s, and the idea was to let the rum really shine instead of covering it up with too many ingredients. That’s why a good mai tai cocktail isn’t overly sweet, it’s all about balance.
Over the years, you’ll see lots of variations, especially in places like Hawaii, where they sometimes add fruit juices for a more tropical twist.
Mai Tai Ingredients

- white rum: A light rum keeps the drink smooth and easy to sip.
- fresh lime juice: Fresh squeezed makes a big difference in flavor.
- orange curaçao (or Cointreau): Adds that classic citrus note.
- orgeat syrup: Gives the drink its signature almond flavor.
- dark rum: Floated on top for a rich finish and that signature layered look.
Optional for serving:
- Lime wedge, cherries, and fresh mint: For garnish.
- 1/4 ounce simple syrup–Adjust based on how sweet you like it.

It should be balanced, not overly sweet, and you can adjust the simple syrup to fit your taste.

Mai Tai

Equipment
- Glass
- Flat Spoon
Ingredients
- 2 ounces white rum
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- 1/2 ounce orange liqueur, like Triple Sec
- 1/2 ounce orgeat
- 1/2 ounce dark rum, (or 1 ounce for more prominent layers)
Optional: 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce simple syrup, depending on your sweetness preference.
Instructions
- Fill a short glass with crushed ice. This helps keep the drink cold and creates the best layered look.
- Pour the white rum, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, and orgeat syrup directly over the ice. If you like a slightly sweeter drink, add the simple syrup.
- Gently stir everything together just until combined. You don’t need to overmix, just enough to blend the flavors.
- Slowly pour the dark rum over the back of a spoon so it floats on top of the drink. This gives it that classic layered look.
- Garnish with a lime wheel and cherry, then serve immediately.
