Variations

  • Mini Mummies: Use cocktail sausages or little smokies with smaller candy eyeballs for bite-sized appetizers.
  • Cheesy Mummies: Add a thin strip of cheese under the dough before wrapping for a melty surprise.
  • Different Dough: Puff pastry works well if you don’t have crescent dough.
  • Eye Options: If candy eyes aren’t handy, make eyes with dots of mustard or ketchup.

How to Make Crescent Mummy Hot Dogs

Crescent dough rolled out and cut into small strips with a pizza cutter.
  1. Preheat oven to 360 degrees F (182 degrees C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with cooking spray. Unroll the crescent dough sheet on a clean surface. If using crescent roll dough with perforations, press them together. Use a pizza cutter or kitchen scissors to slice the dough into thin strips about ½ inch wide.
Uncooked hot dogs wrapped with strips of crescent dough, placed on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  1. Wrap 1–2 pieces of dough around each hot dog, leaving a space at the end of each hot dog for the eyes. These will look like mummy bandages once baked. Place the wrapped hot dogs onto the prepared baking sheet.

Expert Tips

  • Use thinner strips for more bandage detail: Cutting the dough into ¼-inch strips gives more of a layered mummy look, while ½-inch strips create a chunkier style.
  • Watch your bake time: Crescent dough can brown quickly; check at 13 minutes to avoid over-baking.
  • Switch up the sausage: Hot links give spice, but bratwurst work too.
  • Serve with variety: Ketchup and mustard are classics, but BBQ sauce, spicy mayo, or even cheese dip are fun options.

Mummy Hot Dogs FAQs

Can I make crescent mummy dogs ahead of time?

Yes, you can wrap the hot dogs in dough a few hours before baking. Store them covered in the refrigerator, then bake just before serving so they stay fresh.

How do I store leftover mummy hot dogs?

Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for 3–4 days. To reheat, place them back on a baking sheet and warm in a preheated oven at 360 degrees F (182 degrees C) for 6–8 minutes until heated through.

Can I freeze mummy hot dogs?

Yes. If you bake them first, let them cool completely, and then freeze in a sealed container. Reheat then from frozen in a preheated oven for 10–12 minutes until they are hot.

What if I don’t have candy eyes?

Candy eyes are fun, but dots of mustard, pieces of dough, or even tiny bits of cheese work as a substitute.
