Recipe Variations

  • Use dark or milk chocolate: Use a combination of melted chocolate or dark chocolate, in place of candy melts for a rich twist.
  • Dip halfway: Leave the red of the strawberry showing for a layered flag look.
  • Add sparkles: Use edible glitter or red, white, and blue sprinkles to make a sparkly, festive dessert out of your strawberries.
  • Mini treats: Use smaller strawberries and place on toothpicks for serving at parties.

How to Make Red, White, and Blue Strawberries

Melted red, white, and blue candy melts in small white bowls.
  1. Wash and dry strawberries thoroughly, then pat dry with paper towels and let sit at room temperature for 20–30 minutes. Melt red, white, and blue candy melts. Use either a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30–60 second increments, stirring after each, or a double broiler on the stovetop until smooth.

  1. Dip the strawberries into one color at a time, coating completely. Let the excess drip off, then place each dipped berry on wax paper or parchment paper, on top of a cookie sheet.

  1. If adding toppings (like sprinkles or chopped nuts), do it while chocolate is still wet so it will stick. Let the strawberries set at room temperature for 5-10 minutes.

  1. For a drizzle effect, let dipped strawberries dry. Then, spoon melted candy into a piping bag or sandwich bag with the tip snipped. Drizzle over dried strawberries in a back and forth motion.

Expert Tips

  • Let strawberries sit at room temp: Cold berries can cause the chocolate to seize and harden.
  • Pat strawberries dry: Moisture causes chocolate to clump or slide off.
  • Use a shallow but deep bowl: This is easier for dipping the berries.
  • Reheat chocolate: If chocolate or candy melts start to cool, you can reheat in the microwave. Just do it in 15 second increments so you don’t burn the chocolate.

Enjoy your backyard BBQ with fun and refreshing drinks like a classic Mojito Recipe, a colorful Gummy Bear Shot, this zesty Lemon Drop Shot, or my popular Green Tea Shot.

Red, White, and Blue Chocolate Covered Strawberries FAQs

Can I make these red, white, and blue strawberries ahead of time?

Yes, you can make them up to 24 hours in advance. Store in the refrigerator in a single layer, uncovered, to avoid moisture.

Can I use regular chocolate instead of candy melts to make dipped strawberries?

Absolutely! You can use white chocolate, semi-sweet, or milk chocolate chips. Just be sure to melt them slowly to avoid burning.

Why is my chocolate not sticking to the strawberries?

Usually this happens when strawberries are too cold or wet. Let them come to room temperature and make sure they’re completely dry before dipping.
