Expert Tips

  • Don’t skip drying the hot dogs: It makes a big difference in how well the dough sticks.
  • Use cold dough: If the dough is too warm, it can tear while wrapping the strips around the hot dogs.
  • Chill the cheese slightly: Cold cheese are easier to cut into shapes. Keep the cheese chilled until ready to use.
  • Serve with dipsOffer ketchup, mustard, or even barbecue sauce on the side for dunking.

Firecracker Hot Dogs FAQs

Can I make firecracker hot dogs ahead of time?

Yes, you can prep the wrapped hot dogs in advance and store them in the refrigerator for a few hours before baking. Wait to add the skewers and cheese stars until just before serving.

What kind of cheese works best for the stars?

Colby Jack, cheddar, or Monterey Jack all work well. Make sure the slices are about ¼ inch thick so the stars hold their shape.

Can I air fry these firecracker hot dogs instead of baking?

Yes. Air fry at 350 degrees F for 6 to 8 minutes or until golden brown, working in batches to avoid crowding. Try making these with this air fryer pretzel dogs recipe!
